Veneers Q&A

What are veneers?

Dental veneers, also known as laminates, are custom-manufactured shells your Tustin Dental Center provider bonds to the front of your natural, permanent teeth. Veneers are thin and made of porcelain or composite resin, two materials that mimic the color and light-reflecting properties of your natural tooth enamel. Some people only get one veneer, but most people benefit from between six and eight. Once applied, veneers give you a symmetrical, aesthetically pleasing smile.

What types of issues can veneers address?

Veneers improve the physical appearance of your teeth, giving you a whiter and more even smile. At Tustin Dental Center, the team uses veneers to correct a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Discolored or stained teeth

You might also benefit from dental veneers if you have gaps or spaces between your teeth.

What is the process for receiving veneers?

Receiving veneers usually takes two separate appointments. At your first appointment, your dentist performs an oral exam and discusses your goals for treatment. If your teeth and gums are healthy, your dentist moves forward with treatment. First, your dentist administers a local anesthetic, numbing your tooth roots and gums. After the anesthesia sets in, your dentist carefully shaves a thin layer of enamel from the surface of your teeth, approximately a millimeter thick. Next, your dentist uses putty to take impressions of your teeth. Your dentist sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your veneers.

Approximately two to three weeks later, you return to Tustin Dental Center. At your second appointment, your dentist administers a local anesthetic, lines up your veneers with your permanent teeth, and bonds them in place using dental cement.

How do I care for my veneers?

You care for your veneers like you would your permanent teeth. The team at Tustin Dental Center recommends brushing and flossing regularly and visiting the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and exam. You should also avoid bad habits such as chewing on ice or biting your fingernails. If you take proper care of your veneers, they can last for between 10-15 years.

If you regularly cover your mouth when you smile or laugh, consider transforming your teeth with veneers. To make an appointment at Tustin Dental Center, call the office or use the online booking tool today.
