TMJ Q&A

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint disorder –– or TMJ –– is a common problem that causes jaw pain, headaches, and trouble chewing and speaking. You have two temporomandibular joints, and each joint acts like a sliding hinge and connects your jawbone to your skull.

Experts aren’t entirely sure what causes TMJ, but it’s thought that many factors contribute to the condition, including genetics, previous jaw injuries, and arthritis. TMJ usually responds well to conservative at-home measures of care. However, if your symptoms persist or they interfere with your quality of life, it’s important to make an appointment with the team at Tustin Dental Center.

What are the symptoms of TMJ?

TMJ affects people of all ages and genders, but certain factors can increase your risk, including:

  • Difficulty chewing
  • Pain when chewing
  • Aching facial pain
  • Ear pain

You might also develop TMJ if you’re regularly stressed out or anxious, as both of these factors may cause you to clench or grind your teeth.

Who is at risk of TMJ?

TMJ affects people of all ages and genders, but there are certain factors that can increase your risk, including:

  • Suffering a jaw injury
  • Grinding your teeth
  • Arthritis

You might also develop TMJ if you’re regularly stressed out or anxious as both of these factors may cause you to clench or grind your teeth.

Is TMJ treatment right for me?

To determine if TMJ treatment is right for you, make an appointment at Tustin Dental Center. Following an oral exam, review of your medical history, and discussion of your symptoms, your dentist can make treatment recommendations that align with your needs. If necessary, your dentist might also order a series of X-rays to get a closer look at your jawbone.

How do you treat TMJ?

Whenever possible, the team at Tustin Dental Center uses conservative, noninvasive treatments to ease pain caused by TMJ. Depending on your symptoms, they might recommend at-home exercises, physical therapy, or bite guards.

If your symptoms persist, your dentist can also prescribe medications that help relax the muscles in your jaw. If you grind or clench your teeth when sleeping, your dentist might also recommend a night guard to prevent damage to your teeth. In rare instances, surgical intervention may be necessary.

TMJ is a common problem, but it’s also easy to treat. If you’re tired of living with jaw pain, make an appointment with the team at Tustin Dental Center today. Simply call the office or use the online booking tool to begin.
